Howrah’s Rajaram Das lane waterlogged for 8 months, residents protest over inaction

Rajaram Das Lane in Howrah has been facing persistent waterlogging for the past seven to eight months, affecting hundreds of residents. Despite multiple complaints to the Howrah Municipal Corporation and the MLA of Shibpur, the problem remains unresolved. The accumulated water has disrupted daily activities, with roads submerged and drains overflowing. Residents have raised concerns about increasing mosquito breeding, foul odor, and sanitation hazards. Shops and homes in the area have repeatedly faced water intrusion, leading to property damage and business disruptions.

Locals allege that illegal constructions in the neighborhood have worsened the issue, as construction materials left on roads have obstructed drainage cleaning. “The drains remain clogged due to debris, and no cleaning has been done for months,” a resident stated. The stagnant water has also weakened road surfaces, creating potholes and increasing the risk of accidents. Pedestrians and vehicles struggle to navigate the affected roads, with knee-deep water accumulating even in dry weather due to poor drainage.

In response to the prolonged issue, residents staged a road blockade today, demanding immediate intervention. They claim multiple complaints have been lodged, but no effective measures have been taken. Protesters urged the municipal authorities to conduct an urgent inspection and remove drainage blockages. As of now, there has been no official response from the Howrah Municipal Corporation or the MLA’s office regarding steps to address the situation.
